iranian protesters

I apologize in advance for the ugly formatting and organization.

* I've officially been on summer vacation for the past three days, and I'm absolutely loving it. I'm trying to actually get stuff done this summer, instead of just veg out in front of the computer and sleep all day, and in terms of productivity, everything's going swimmingly.

What's Gotten Done

-The first three chapters of my required summer reading/annotating project for Honors English 11 next year were read; the book is Lord of the Flies, a book I read a few years back (but which mostly went over my head >.<).

-At least three years of magazines got emptied from my bookshelves, something I've been meaning to do for six months or so.

-Eight or nine job applications got filled out. I'm crossing my fingers for a callback from either Tim Hortons or Subways, the two least greasy prospects so far.

-$11 was spent on going to see Star Trek with my mom for a second time, and it was totally worth it. That movie is sheer concentrated GQMF-ery, let me tell you. If you haven't seen it, something is terribly, horribly wrong in your life right now. Seriously, the ship potential in that movie is limitless (and I'm not just talking about the Enterprise! *rimshot*). Kirk/Spock, Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura, Chekov/Sulu; and that's not even mentioning the threesomes or gratuitous use of lens flares!

-At least two gigabytes of music was downloaded. Ngl, I have about 3,800 songs in my iTunes right now. ^_^ I'm a horrible person, I know, depriving people of their livelihoods and all that--but I swear, as soon as I get some disposable income I'll start paying back the bands who really need the money. And as a little gift, here's my Mediafire folder. Have fun with it. :)

* Band Camp in 12 days! *squee* I've missed Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp so much, I can't wait to go back and see all my old instructors again. I'm taking a music composition minor, so I've been learning all about theory and doodling around on the piano; I haven't actually "written" anything substantial yet, but that's what the class is for, right?

* I know everyone and their half-cousin already has one, but I've got two DW invite codes if anyone wants them. Just comment here, even if we've never talked, because I'm super nice like that. :)

* Keep Iran in your thoughts, please. If there's a protest going on in your area, I hope you'll consider attending. The government's brutal violence and oppression against their own citizenry is absolutely appalling. I don't really know what to say, but please don't ignore what's happening there. *steps off soapbox*

Nah, that's not how we do it...

* I can't believe the school year's almost over. I go to music camp in a little over a month, and I am so psyched. I'm pretty sure this is going to be my last year there (as I'm thinking about attending the JSA Summer School next year), so I've been practicing my ass off to get a good placement. Last year I was crushed when I got put into Symphony Band--there's no way I'm getting stuck there again.

* I'm desperate for a job right now. Seriously. I applied to McDonalds, even after I just watched SuperSize Me and read Fast Food Nation. :( The dad of the family I babysit for just broke his leg, so he's on disability at home for six weeks, negating the need for the babysitter (i.e. me). I don't know if anyone will hire me, seeing as I'm going to be gone for three weeks this summer, not to mention my insanely busy fall schedule, but I figured I'd give it a shot. If I want to go to Northwestern, which I do, I'll need all the cash I can get $53,000ayearyoumustbekiddingohJesuswhyme. T_T

* Speaking of college, I'm starting to put together a list of potential colleges for the next two years. The only two I have right now are the aforementioned Northwestern and the behemoth of a school that is University of Michigan. My criteria so far: good music program, an available journalism major, great Political Science department, scholarships for music/academics. I would love a marching band, TV station, radio station, or newspaper. If you feel like pimping your colleges, feel free; I need all the help I can get right now. :)

* Is anyone else a fan of KPop? I heard Big Bang and 2NE1's song Lollipop over at ohnotheydidnt (the video of which is underneath) and I'm sort of hooked now. It's kind of odd, because I don't even like manga or anything remotely Asian, but the music is just so damn poppy. Totally random observation, I know, but Seung Ri has a scary resemblance to a Korean Pete Wentz. 0_o

* I've officially lost 50 pounds! *does a little dance* I've been working at it since January, so this is pretty big for me. I've still got a while to go, but it's definitely a milestone. :)

I gave in and joined twitter. I feel an odd combination of excitement and slight disgust. Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions of famous/awesome people to follow. I've already got Miles Kahn (the TDS writer) and Jason Chaffetz (Utah Repub on CNN's Freshman Year), but I need a lot more people.

And while I'm asking for recommendations, read any good fic lately? New or old stuff, I'm not picky, just bored. :D

...I know I never actually update, and all I do is ask people for stuff, but I'm a shitty friend like that. :)

I'm trying, I really am...

King Me, Bitch

I just watched all three episodes of the new NBC series Kings, and it was amazing. If this gets canceled because people are asshats, I'm going to be extremely pissed. It sounded lame and contrived to me at first, but it sucks you in. If you get a chance, you should definitely think about checking it out. There's even gay princely angst in it, if that's your kind of thing. :)

A few days ago or so, I saw a trailer for the movie Repo! The Genetic Opera, and it looked amazing. So I found a copy online and watched it. IT WAS AMAZING. I joined all the Repo! comms on livejournal, downloaded the soundtrack, registered on the movie's boards, watched all the interviews on youtube, and bought the DVD from Walmart. I think this is the fastest I've gotten myself embedded so deeply into a fandom. Any other Repo! fans out there? Because I seriously need someone to fangirl over Terrance Zdunich with, and possibly explain my totally epic AU that will never be written where Rotti blackmails Marni and raises Shilo to his successor. :D

TL;DR: Quiz Bowl, Dwayne/Frank, New Books, English Essay

We had our Quiz Bowl tournament a few days ago on Thursday, and we placed fifth out of nine teams competing. :) That's pretty good, considering our team is the one team that takes absolutely nothing seriously, dresses up in costume for every meet, and brings a pink iPod stereo to blast music out of while we parade through the halls. Normally I don't join in on the general tomfoolery (as QB is srs bsns, obvs), but this time I put on a toga and a smile. The guys took of their shirts and ran through the halls of the school we were competing at, so my sacrifice was very much worth it.

phantom_roxs has been talking about the movie Little Miss Sunshine lately, which everyone needs to watch, so here's a link. I rewatched the movie for the first time in a long while yesterday, and I got hooked on Frank/Dwayne. It's incestuous and semi-pedophilic (but I like to imagine that part doesn't count when the character is close to your age), but it feels so good. I've got an odd urge to write an extremely angsty fic where Dwayne seduces Frank and Richard walks in on them and Frank is exiled from the family, leaving behind a hurt, angry, heartbroken Dwayne who is forced into therapy and stops talking again. Or something like that.

After I was done babysitting at church (which is the only reason I go there, seeing as me=agnostic atheist), my mother and I went up to the thrift shop and I got like five books for $2.50! Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond, Letters From the Earth by Mark Twain, The Death of Tragedy by George Steiner, and The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories edited by Tobias Wolff. I'm also reading Brisingr, the third book in the Inheritance/Eragon series, and it's like cotton candy for my brain: so so good but hardly any nutritional value whatsoever. I've got at least three other books on the burner, but I'm ADD with my reading. I half-finish books all the time, then leave them on the shelf for months. Bad habits, what can you do. *sigh*

While writing this obscenely long and digressive post, the English essay due Monday is kicking my ass. :'( Oh Honors 10, how I wish you would burn in a dark and fiery abyss.
